Best Time for Tourists to Visit Kota

Weather is one thing — festivals, safari seasons and crowds are another. Here's how to time your Kota trip for the experience you're after.

Time it around what you love

For most tourists, October to March is the golden window — comfortable weather and the city at its liveliest. But the "best" time really depends on whether you're chasing a festival, a wildlife safari or just some quiet sightseeing. Let's break it down.

The big one: Kota Dussehra Mela

If you can swing the dates, come for the Kota Dussehra Mela (usually late September or October, around Vijayadashami). It's one of the largest and oldest Dussehra fairs in the country — towering effigies, a sprawling fairground, food stalls, folk performances and a buzz that takes over the whole city for days. Book your hotel well in advance, beacuse rooms fill up quick during the mela.

Season-by-season for visitors

Oct – Mar

Peak season — do everything

Best weather, full safari season on the Chambal, festivals galore (Dussehra, Diwali, then the winter wedding buzz). Sights are open, evenings are pleasant. The only downside is more visitors at popular spots on weekends.

Jul – Sep

Monsoon — green & uncrowded

Fewer tourists, lower hotel rates and a landscape that's lush and photogenic. Gaipernath waterfall is in full flow. Some boat safaris pause at high water, so check ahead. Great for slow, scenic travel.

Apr – Jun

Summer — for the brave

Hot, but quiet and cheap. If you can handle dawn-and-dusk sightseeing with afternoon siestas, you'll have the palaces almost to yourself. Not ideal for families with small kids.

Wildlife

Chambal safari window

The Chambal boat safari season generally runs October to June. Winter mornings are best for birdlife and basking crocodiles, while summer brings clearer sightings along the shrinking banks.

Avoiding the crowds

Even in peak season, Kota rarely feels overrun compared to Jaipur or Udaipur. A couple of simple tricks help: visit big sights like Seven Wonders Park on weekday mornings, do the riverfront on a weeknight, and start your Garadia Mahadev trip at sunrise. You'll get the best light and the smallest crowds, win-win.
