Kota Travel Guide
Everything you need to plan a smooth trip to Kota, Rajasthan β getting there, getting around, where to sleep, what to eat and how the weather plays in.
Where is Kota?
Kota sits in southeastern Rajasthan, on the banks of the Chambal River, in the region known as Hadoti. It's the state's third-largest city and a major railway junction, which makes it surprisingly easy to reach. Most people pass through on the way to Jaipur or Udaipur β our advice is to stop and stay a night or two, you won't regret it.
How to reach Kota
By train (the easy way)
Kota Junction is one of the busiest stations on the DelhiβMumbai line, with fast trains including the Rajdhani and Vande Bharat. From Delhi it's roughly 4.5β6 hours; from Mumbai an overnight ride; from Jaipur around 3β4 hours. Honestly, the train is the most comfortable and affordable option for Kota.
By road
Smooth highways connect Kota to Jaipur (β250 km), Udaipur, Ajmer and Bundi (β40 km). Self-drive, taxi or RSRTC buses all work. We can arrange a comfortable cab with a local driver as part of any package.
By air
Kota's own airport has limited flights, so most fliers land at Jaipur (β250 km) and continue by train or road. Sasta Holiday can sort the flights and the onward transfer in one go.
Getting around the city
Autos and e-rickshaws are everywhere and cheap for short hops. For a full day of sightseeing, a hired cab is far more comfortable β the sights are a bit spread out, and the gorge viewpoints need a vehicle. Ride apps work in the city centre but can be patchy for outlying spots.
Where to stay
Kota has everything from budget lodges near the station to comfortable mid-range hotels and a few heritage-style stays. For sightseeing, pick somewhere central or near the riverfront. Book early around the Dussehra Mela and the winter wedding season, when rooms get scarce.
What to eat
Kota does Rajasthani comfort food brilliantly. Don't miss dal-baati-churma, the spicy local Kota kachori, piping-hot jalebis, and thick lassi. The old-city lanes near Mathuradheesh temple are the place to graze. Vegetarian options are everywhere; let us know any preferances and we'll point you right.
Weather & what to pack
This is where it pays to plan. Winters (OctβMar) are cool and lovely β pack light layers. Summers (AprβJun) are hot and dry β cottons, a hat, sunscreen and lots of water. Monsoon (JulβSep) is green and humid β quick-dry clothes and a rain cover. Always glance at our 7-day forecast before you pack, and the best time to visit guide before you book.
